Feminist Criticism Of A Rose For A Rose For Emily By...

She Will Kill Herself There are three main sections to a literary interaction, which are emphasis on the text, emphasis on the source and emphasis on the receiver. Under emphasis on the receiver there are several different critical approaches including feminist criticism. Feminist criticism focuses on the critique of female writers, the role of female characters, and how those roles are portrayed by their characteristics and often demeaning actions. In â€Å"A Rose for ‘A Rose for Emily,’† Judith Fetterley states that â€Å"A Rose for Emily† is a â€Å"story of a woman victimized and betrayed by the system of sexual politics, who nevertheless has discovered, within the structures that victimize her, sources of power for herself† (Fetterley 745). Perhaps one of yo u can you can gain access to the city records and satisfy yourselves.† â€Å"But we have. We are the city authorities, Miss Emily. Didn’t you get a notice by the sheriff, signed by him?† â€Å"I received a paper, yes,† Miss Emily said. â€Å"Perhaps he considers himself the sheriff†¦.I have no taxes in Jefferson.† â€Å"But there is nothing on the books to show that, you see. We must go by the-† â€Å"See Colonel Sartoris. I have no taxes in Jefferson.† â€Å"But, Miss Emily-† â€Å"See Colonel Sartoris.† â€Å"I have no taxes in Jefferson. Tobe!† â€Å"Show these gentlemen to the door† (Faulkner 731). It is obvious that Miss Emily acknowledges the written notice; after all she sends it back, but without payment. She does not seem to acknowledge the authority of the town when the men pay her a visit about the taxes they claim she owes. These two actions by Miss Emily tell me that she has control not only of not paying the taxes, but also of the men demanding them. She barely lets them speak and gets them thrown out of her house without the money they went there to collect. Some may think that the druggist whom she asked the arsenic from did not play an important part in this story. However, although Miss Emily did not have much contact with him, he isShow MoreRelatedA Rose for Emily Psychoanalysis2422 Words   |  10 Pagessignifying elements is traditionally the province of formalist criticism, which specifies (after the New Criticism) that we note point of view or imagery or metaphor in our analysis. The interpretation of these elements, the making of meaning out of them, then depends on the context or method of interpretation we apply to them. Thus we can easily see why a signifying elementlike the figure of the father in Faulkners A Rose for Emily-has so many different meanings. Do we interpret him historically
